چکیده

A defect coupling to the square of the order parameter in a nearly quantum-critical magnet can nucleate an ordered droplet while the bulk system is in the paramagnetic phase. We study the influence of long-range spatial interactions of the form r on the droplet formation. To this end, we solve a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson free energy in saddle point approximation. The longrange interaction causes the droplet to develop an energetically unfavorable power-law tail. However, for σ > 0, the free energy contribution of this tail is subleading in the limit of large droplets; and the droplet formation is controlled by the defect bulk. Thus, for large defects, long-range interactions do not hinder the formation of droplets.

Magnetic long-range order induced by quantum relaxation in single-molecule magnets.

Can magnetic interactions between single-molecule magnets (SMMs) in a crystal establish long-range magnetic order at low temperatures deep in the quantum regime, where the only electron spin fluctuations are due to incoherent magnetic quantum tunneling (MQT)? Put inversely: can MQT provide the temperature dependent fluctuations needed to destroy the ordered state above some finite T(c), althoug...

Energetic selection of ordered states in a model of the Er2Ti2O7 frustrated pyrochlore XY antiferromagnet

We consider the possibility that the discrete long-range ordered states of Er2Ti2O7 are selected energetically at the mean field level as an alternative scenario that suggests selection via thermal fluctuations. We show that nearest neighbour exchange interactions alone are not sufficient for this purpose, but that anisotropies arising from excited single ion crystal field states in Er2Ti2O7, t...

Trapped-ion quantum simulation of tunable-range Heisenberg chains

Quantum-optical techniques allow for generating controllable spin-spin interactions between ions, making trapped ions an ideal quantum simulator of Heisenberg chains. A single parameter, the detuning of the Raman coupling, allows to switch between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic chains, and to modify the range of the interactions. On the antiferromagnetic side, the system can be tuned from ...

Spin-wave interactions in quantum antiferromagnets

– We study spin-wave interactions in quantum antiferromagnets by expressing the usual magnon annihilation and creation operators in terms of Hermitian field operators representing transverse staggered and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. In this parameterization, which was anticipated by Anderson in 1952, the two-body interaction vertex between staggered spin fluctuations vanishes at long wavel...

Perturbative instability of quantum memory based on effective long-range interactions

A two-dimensional topologically ordered quantum memory is well protected against error if the energy gap is large compared to the temperature, but this protection does not improve as the system size increases. We review and critique some recent proposals for improving the memory time by introducing long-range interactions among anyons, noting that instability with respect to small local perturb...
